Two Brand NEW DSLR Released from Canon – Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera & Canon EOS Rebel T5i DSLR Camera

Canon has two brand new DSLR cameras on the market today, the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera & the Canon EOS Rebel T5i DSLR Camera. Let’s have a look at them both and see how (or if) they set themselves apart from their predecessors.

The new Canon EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR Camera is said to be Canon’s smallest DSLR to date, clocking in at only 0.8 lbs. The SL1 DSLR has a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens which means that it is compatible with Canon’s STM (Stepping Motor) feature that currently only works with the Rebel T4i and now the Rebel T5i.

The new Canon EOS Rebel T5i DSLR Camera now has an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens option. The STM (Stepping Motor) feature of this lens presently works only with the Canon EOS Rebel T4i and T5i Digital Cameras. This EF-S lens is designed to match the APS-C sensor size and its STM designation gives it a smooth and quiet autofocus that is ideal for shooting video with the Movie Servo AF feature found on select Canon DSLRs. Autofocus speed is achieved thanks to the lens’ high speed CPU connection with the camera and its Inner Focusing System. Auto and manual focusing is possible, aspheric and UD lens elements provide quality imaging. There is also a Canon EOS Rebel T5i DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens option available. Sounds a bit like the T4i, you say? What are your thoughts on these cameras? Are any of you keen on purchasing either the EOS Rebel SL1 or the Rebel T5i?

On the Canon SL1 and T5i, I’m not sure what Canon was thinking about when they decided to introduce these models. The T5i specs read the same as the T4i (which I have and was a very nice Christmas 2012 gift from my significant other), and the price point is the same as the T4i ! Are they trying to sell STM lenses? Ditto for the SL1 on features and price point.
If they are targeting the video market, wouldn’t a consumer be better served with a video cam?

Don’t see any advantages for these two new models over Canon’s current line of DSLRs.

    Two things:

    1) Many people were on the fence between the t3i and t4i, as they are very similar. The t5i is even closer to the t4i as the t3i is to t4i. No digic 6? No more video options? No 1080p/60fps?

Not enough to make people buy the new, imho.

    2) I’m disappointed there was no 70d announcement. That what I was hoping for.

I love these cameras <3. Specially with my Canon ef lens, the pictures appear as magic.
