Tuesday Tip – Rosco Color Effects Kit as Color Filters

Maxwell from Flint Michigan wrote in and requested a Tuesday Tip on options for filters for the F&V R-300 LED Ring Light. This trick can work for other LED lights as well. We’re simply using the Rosco Color Effects Kit as our filter system for this Ring Light.

Since the filters that come with the F&V R-300 LED Ring Light are attached via magnets, it was easy to secure the filters onto the light without having to use tape, C47′s or anything else as a fastener. I traced the inner and outer areas of the light and cut around them to fit the shape of the housing on the Ring Light. **Technically don’t even need to trim the outer pieces, as the filter will stay safely on so long as the inner circle has been cut out. This means that on rectangular lights, depending on whether or not the housing is recessed, you may be able to skip the Martha Stewart process of tracing and trimming altogether. This really depends on the type of light you’re using. Keep in mind that LED lights are COOL which means you don’t have to worry about your gels melting. This Rosco Color Effects Kit is smaller as well so it’s cheaper than traditional gels.

Hey, I have a suggestion. I still cannot figure out how would you block/control light with these, when you use them as regular stand lights. There is no barn doors, when traveling you don’t have much space to pack additional tripods and flags. Do you have any tip for that, excluding black foil.

    Thanks

@Kamil I will say use a flag or black foil (sorry I have to) for now.. let me look into this a bit. The R-300′s are dimmable, however, I see what you are saying. I’ll check around on this one. Anyone else out there have an answer for Kamil and myself in the mean time?

I haven’t found any easily adaptable barn doors so black foil is the easiest. I glued a few little plastic L tabs (found them wandering around HomeDepot in the blinds section) and it makes clipping the foil on a lot easier…

Oh and I just use some little fridge magnets to stick my gels on without cutting or using the diffuser piece, I don’t shoot through the lights…

Awesome tip! I’m still waiting to get my r-300 light, I’ll make sure to cut out a few gels to have in my kit ready to go. Thanks!
