Trapezist Portable Mini Jib from Light Craft Workshop

Trapezist Portable Mini Jib from SCS-TV on Vimeo.

The Trapezist is a brand new portable jib from Light Craft Workshop. With a compact size of only 60cm, this jib can fully extend to 130cm, providing a maximum working diameter of 206cm. It weighs only 1.7kg and can support to 3.5kg. LCW has put this jib to the test with a Canon 1D MK 4 + 16-35 MKII + 701 Fluid head and it worked properly. This is an example of the payload you can expect to be supported by the Trapezist.

A nice stand-out feature of the Trapezist is the 4 1/4″ screw thread and a magic arm that allows user to attach different kind of device on it, including external monitor, USB follow focus, audio recorder, etc.

The original selling price is set at USD$339, however Light Craft Workshop is currently launching the Trapezist for USD$299 (shipping not included). Items are limited in quantity at the moment, so people may get it immediately if they are quick enough, or else they may have to wait for another 3 weeks.

    Ordered!

Thanks for finding this Olivia. I was SO close to supporting the Aviator Jib on Kickstarter even though it wouldn’t be ready for a big project I have in a few weeks. (I may still send a few bucks their way…I like the product).

This jib is very similar, cheaper, and I’ll have it by next week!

Shipping is a bit heavy ($50 to Canada). Though that’s not ridiculous as it’s a bulkier item than your typical camera accessory. Looks like it’s coming straight out of China as EMS was a shipping option.

    • Olivia says:

Right on, Dave! Please let me know how the jib works out for you. You’re always engaging with me here, I really appreciate your feedback!

im considering this and aviator jib also.

this looks like a better build and slightly cheaper.

the thing is, this doesnt come with the panning base.

anyone know if there is any fluid panning base on the market (just the base, not the full fluid head)

    cheers

Well I have been looking into getting a cheap mini jib to pack into the backcountry. I was looking at the CobraCrane Backpacker before this.
I just ordered this one before talking myself out of it. Hope it is not a POS.

First time ordering anything from China……………..

  • Daniel says:

What tripod would you recommend for this camera jib?

    • Olivia says:

Hi Daniel, this question depends on whether or not you are looking for something more on the affordable side or not. For a reliable and affordable tripod, my suggestion is the WF717 Kit.

Thanks for the advice. I just ordered one so I can’t wait to try it out. I really appreciate all the stuff and video tips you put up on the site. It’s definitely helped out in tons of ways.

    Another order placed :-)

The say the first batch is already sold out, so the next batch will arrive in 14 days, but orders can still be placed at the lower price. Shipping to Greece is $65 with UPS, so in all it comes out at €304. Not bad at all. And a free magic arm :-) Thanks for all your posts Olivia!!

I’ve had a few kickstarter projects and eBay buys this year ship straight from China and so far it’s been pretty painless…no worse than stuff coming from the US.

  • Ming says:

From I see everything is perfect. Except can’t tilt like Cobra Crane :(

  • Shawn says:

Wow just received my jib from these guys in less than a week all the way from China. It did have an extra cod charge of 60 bucks though. So total price to my door was just over 400 bucks. Filming an open box of it right now.

  • DaveT says:

Mine’s sitting at the post office waiting for me. I’ll pick it up tonight and report back…I wonder if I’ll get the COD charge too. It’s a gamble with Canada Post.

  • Rob B says:

Just ordered one tonight – really hoping that the build quality is good (well at least reasonable) on these.

Customs in England are a nightmare so im fully prepared to be stung.

  • DaveT says:

Just unpacked mine. Only paid $26 in fees.

Build quality is good. Not what I’d call great but it should stand up to regular use just fine. The base and head are painted, not anodized, but the fit is good and it feels solid. The empty sand bag is a nice touch too. It’s well suited to my 7D and 190More tripod with a fluid head. I haven’t done more than set it up but it seems that it will work well for what it is considering it’s limitations.

Collapsed it’s not much longer than my Varavon Lite slider and a bit shorter than my Manfrotto 561 video monopod. It sets up easy and with a quick release plate added to the head, it could be unbagged and ready to use in under a minute. It’s lighter than it looks which is a good thing. My only beef is that the bag it’s shipped in is way too big for it. I won’t be using it though it doesn’t really need it…it should strap to any bag with accommodations for a tripod.

I got mine in last week. It wasn’t packaged very well, but seemed to be just fine – nothing broken. On top of the $50 for UPS to ship to the US, today I got an invoice from UPS for $12.48 for customs fee’s :(
For what it is, it seems to work nice, though no tilt, as others have mentioned. I do like that it’s nice and light, easy to take along. I have a larger one I only take when I know I’ll need it. This one is easy enough to take along anytime, just in case. Even fits nicely on my bike :)

    Thanks,
    Richard.

    Hi Olivia–

Not considering the price or portability of either jib but rather in terms of each of their “performance,” how does the “Glideshot Portable 4′ Video Crane Jib” you reviewed in summer 2011 compare with “Trapezist Portable Mini Jib from Light Craft”???

Which jib produces more stable (less jerky) video motion??? Which one is built better???

    Best,

    AC

    • Olivia says:

@AC Both jibs got the job done. The Glideshot was a bit heftier/heavier. I hardly remember enough to state an honest comparison. The Trapezist is made to be portable and lightweight. My best advice when using this jib is to make sure the counter weights are at a nice ratio and that everything is tightened up.

Just ordered the iFootage Mini Crane M1. I was attracted by the cheap price. Just $20 more and its carbon fiber! its a lot lighter and i think it carries more weight! Ill see if I can do a review once I get it.

  • Tim says:

Just got mine. I really don’t enjoy the way the how main pole locks into place when fully extended, it’s really hard to press the two little locking balls all together and shortens it. Overall, it’s a nice product ~

  • david says:

im trying to decide between the ifootage mini crane M1 and the trapezist. Anyone seen both side by side? Any real world footage from the ifootage M1 out there? let me know and thank you!
