The Sony HDR-AS15 Action Video Camera Stand-Out Specs

We’re all waiting for the release of Sony’s new Action Video Camera the HDR-AS15 and HDR-AS10, but besides the attractive price point, what are a few of the main stand-out features that this action cam is promising to outshine the GoPro HERO 2 with? Let’s take a look at what I think holds this camera above its handsome cousin.

Sony review of the HDR-AS15

Tech Specs

1) SteadyShot® Image Stabilization Reduces Blur
SteadyShot® image stabilization with Active Mode compensates for greater degrees of camera shake to deliver stunningly smooth video from wide angle to full telephoto shooting. In addition, innovative 3-Way Shake-Canceling adds electronic roll stability for even smoother video capture.

2) Share via Connected Phone/Tablet
Wi-Fi®-enabled mobile phones and tablets running the free PlayMemories Mobile™ application3 can pull optimized movies and photos from the Sony HDR-AS15 camera without requiring a special cable. Once copied, you can use your available 3G and 4G cell networks to upload your memories and share them via email or social media networks.

3) 4x Slow Motion Video Mode in HD
Extreme sports athletes and enthusiasts will enjoy HD SLOW 2x (1280 x 720, 60p) and HD SLOW 4x (1280 x 720, 120p) that shoot slow motion, which is ideal for studying and refining form and technique. For traditional shooting methods, the camcorder also offers several different resolutions to suit your needs: shoots in Full HD (1920×1080 30p), STD HD (1280×720, 30p), SD VGA (640×480, 30p).

4) Low-Light Sensativity
Sometimes the best moments happen after the sun goes down. That’s why Action Cam features a back-illuminated Exmor® R CMOS sensor for incredible low-light sensitivity, improved clarity and drastically reduced grain. Just what you need for exploring a dark cave or tearing up the slopes at night.

The Sony HDR-AS15 and AS10 are both available now for preorder but the question is, are you willing to buy? For all of you GoPro fanatics out there, will Sony’s new camera sway your loyalty? Personally, the Wi-Fi feature that comes built into this camera alone is a selling point for me. I think we’re going to start to see this implementation of this technology more and more for cameras and video cameras as mobile phone photography is becoming so popular in rapid waves (thanks Instagram and Facebook). So… what are your thoughts and opinions?

God I Can’t Wait for This! Been holding out from GoPro for a while, was finally gonna get the GoPro Hero2 but this thing look amazing! The fact that wifi is included and you’ll be able to control it via phone or tablet is so exiting! I just hope the actual footage lives up to the hype. Not to mention the 120fps at 720p… Wow!

    • Olivia says:

@Jack I’m super stoked too! The built in Wi-Fi kills it. I’m not a fan of GoPro’s Wi-Fi system. I’ve had it for months and they still have yet to release the accompanying app. Fail.

Hey Olivia :) Thanks for the awesome “Tuesday Tip” on screen shots! Been using the built in windows version for a while but always having to photoshop comments and other stuff, these browser plugins are Awesome! :)

I got my HDR-AS15 Today and it is L.O.V.E.L.Y! Such a sweet little thing and the wifi function is awesome. I am shooting an event for Halloween and plan to use it like crazy so I’ll share some footage with you guys after :)

Keep up the Awesome Work and Great Posts! :)

I can’t see these replacing my Hero2 cameras…they still offer a lot that these cameras don’t appear to…but the wifi and high FPS options combined with image stabilization are leading me to believe I’ll have both sooner or later.

For somebody getting an action cam for the first time, these are going to be VERY attractive. The price on the non-wifi version is almost too low to believe.

    • Olivia says:

@Dave Knowing the bit I do about your collection, I think you’ll end up with both the GoPro and the HDR-AS15 too haha

      • DaveT says:

App support might be the deal breaker. I’m already addicted to the wifi back on the Hero as is but when the apps come out, I might just buy more Hero2s. Being able to control 50 of them from a single remote, phone, or tablet is VERY attractive. On the other hand if it meshes with the app support for the upcoming NEX cameras in a similar way, that could be better.

Part of me hopes either becomes sophisticated enough to live edit several cameras all from an iPad…I’d stay committed to either for that alone, no question.

Excited for this also. Exmor sensor in low light sounds promising. OSS also a plus. I’m a fan of the low profile Contour-esque style vs. box non-aerodynamic configuration… never understood how that won out. Hopefully the quality is as good as the demo video. We’ll find out soon… pre-ordered.

    • Olivia says:

@Ken Such a good point about the form factor! I couldn’t agree more.

    • Corey M says:

After watching this video, I’m more open to it than I was. Sony has a way of using proprietary parts/components/accessories that I just can’t stand, but hearing this will accept MicroSD is amazing.

Also, I should point out that the cam doesn’t have OSS, but ISS. Same idea, just a different technique. ISS is digitally done during/after the video has been shot versus OSS using moving elements in the lens (or using a moving sensor).

I’m excited to see and read actual hands-on reviews!

  • Elliot says:

I’m totally excited for this 120fps HD 720p is amazing. I wish i could find a camcorder or point and shoot, not to mention a helmet cam, that shoots this resolution. It’s amazing. :D

  • lew says:

I’ve just baught a Hero2 but this Sony is just amazing ! love my Hx9v and I was a bit desapointed about the only 1080 30p of the Hero2. This Sony HDR-AS15 seems to be great, and if the stabilized is a good as the Hx9V this will be awesome !
But… I love the harnais mount withe the GoPro, and don’t think this Sony HDR-AS15 would be able to to this because of the long shape of the cam. Hope this will reduce the price of the GoPros !

  • ARCUS1200 says:

I am about to buy an actioncam, what should I do? Go for the Hero HD2 or for this Sony cam? I hope this sony cam can be used in a 3D setup as well…

  • ko_porter says:

This camera looks very promiscing, but it’s true the shape, although better for helmet positionning or even car use (stuck to the doors outside for ex), it does not seem appropriate to use for harnais mount. I guess none could perfectly fit in all situations, they had to choose a form factor.

One of the main benefits with the GoPro is the large set of accessories, either that being part of the package or as later additions.

Too bad they didn’t release the app yet, i’ve got the wifi extension, but it’s of no use to me for now, i was really looking at it for the App “viewfinder” possibilities.

  • dphotos says:

120 slow mo and Wifi is going to really hurt GoPro. I rather have the Sony.

  • labalbi says:

The cam is about to be released …why we cant find a single hands on review so far ?
Why Sony did not lend the cam to any blog for reviewing ?
