The New Android-Powered Nikon COOLPIX S800c

Now available on B&H for preorder, Nikon has announced the new COOLPIX S800c. This is a 16MP point-and-shoot digital camera powered by the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. What does this mean? This camera enables you to shoot pictures and Full HD video and then share your creations through Wi-Fi. The COOLPIX S800c transforms your camera into a smart device so you can browse the Web, check your email, Instagram and Facebook feed, and choose from Google Play’s slew of available apps.

A built-in GPS chip on the S800c records latitude and longitude so you can pinpoint the location where each photo was made, and in-camera effects can be added to stills and video for a more creative touch (think Instagram). A world of photo-related apps is at your disposal as well, going beyond applying filters like the ones found in popular programs like Instagram and Hipstamatic. There are scores of apps that add advanced capabilities for creating panoramic images, time lapses, HDR photos and more. There are also apps that use location data to calculate accurate sunrise, sunset and golden-hour times, so you know when you’ll have the best light in which to shoot. Innovative new photo apps are being introduced all the time, and the S800c lets you take advantage of them in low light with its backside illuminated CMOS sensor and optical zoom.

Nice to see that wi-fi is starting to be implemented. Covering live events …it would be nice to share a network connection with another individual (seated in the audience) with laptop …let them edit and post photos & video to the Internet …while someone else can concentrate on capturing the event.
I wonder what the power draw is going to be with this little camera functioning at 1080p/30Hz? Hopefully, the battery will last for a reasonable amount of time.
Didn’t see an audio input jack, but everything else looked pretty nice for the price.
Wonder what’s going to be available in another 5 years? …blows my mind.
This is so hot. Now all you needs is a GPS gyroscopic app that will collect camera angle data and you’ll have instant image stablization/camera tracking in post
