The Canon EOS 6D is a light-weight full frame DSLR with wireless connectivity (there is an app for this), GPS capabilities, an in-camera High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode and the ability to create multiple exposures. The 6D is the only DSLR in Canon’s full-frame lineup that has only one SD card slot only. Availability for the Canon 6D is expected in early 2013. This release comes after that of the Nikon D600 which could be a hefty contender to this bite sized full-frame.

The Sony SLT-A99 is Sony’s latest full framed interchangeable lens camera. This power house includes the Quick Navi interactive status panel, a weather sealed construct and a ridiculous number of features for video shooters: a ‘silent’ control dial, mic and headphone ports, focus peaking and 1080p60 in HD to name a few. A stand-out is the A99′s 24MP 36x24mm CMOS sensor that features on-sensor phase detection, creating a dual AF system that boasts improved focus tracking and focus precision. The 3″ three-way tiltable 1229k-dot (VGA equivalent) XtraFine LCD™ display with WhiteMagic™ technology compliments the Tru-Finder EVF well. This camera is available for preorder now for $2799.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3 Mirrorless Digital Camera is capable of shooting in either MP4, MOV, AVCHD or AVCHD Progressive, with a maximum bandwidth of 72 Mbps (ALL-Intra) / 50 Mbps (IPB). The formats can be recorded using frame rates of 24, 30 and 60p (excluding MOV and AVCHD). The DMC-GH3 includes a count-up system with REC Run and Free Run codes and a recording system with Drop Frame and Non Drop Frame codes for easier syncing in post production. As we’re seeing more and more, this camera also comes with Wi-Fi connectivity so you can sync up with your mobile phone and control the camera remotely while connected or upload media to the web. So far it looks like the GH3 will come with an F2.8 35-100mm lens that will also be dust and splash-proof.

There are so many new cameras coming out. How are we supposed to choose? I must admit I’m kind of lost…

  • Reggie says:

I only recently bought a GH2 within the past year as my first foray into more than a point-and-shoot and I love the camera. I’m really just learning / having fun / doing this as a hobby. Decided on the GH2 after visiting this site and seeing your videos on the GH2 as well many other sites lauding its video performance.

Admittedly I’ve shot more stills than video. Since I’m now invested m43 lenses, wondering how the IQ is on the GH3 and would it be worth it to upgrade (possibly selling the GH2 body if I do)? If not the GH3, what m43 camera would be good for stills primarily (I’d keep the GH2 in this case)?

@Reggie The GH3 looks like an AMAZING camera. I want to get my hands on one, badly. I can imagine from what I’ve seen online so far that the IQ will be outstanding. I really like the NEX series for m4/3. Have you considered hacking the GH2? For video, the GH3 is stellar. If you’re mainly shooting photos, it might be worth your while to hack the GH2 and invest in another m4/3. What features are you looking for?

      • Reggie says:

I’m currently using ‘Sanity 5′ on my GH2. A lot of what goes on in those hacks/patches are way over my head. All I take away from it is higher bitrate = better quality. That’s oversimplifying things obviously.

I think I will keep the GH2 and possibly go for another m4/3 camera. In terms of features, not so sure at this point. I have some research to do. Mainly want as low noise as possible in low light conditions. Liking that Olympus OM-D but that’s definitely not in my budget right now.
