Original Blackmagic Cinema Camera Footage for You to Download and Alter in Post
Below is original ProRes 422 (HQ) footage shot with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera in Film mode. I would love for you guys to download the ORIGINAL VIDEO so you can pull the footage into post and do with it what you may. Who is curious to play around with BMCC footage? Here is your chance and you don’t even need to own the camera! Due to the fact that there is so much dynamic range to toy with and push in post, you guys can really go to town grading and correcting this footage to your liking.
I’m really curious as to what you all will come up with! Create your own edited version of this OTech video and really see what the Blackmagic Cinema Camera will allow you to do in post production. Once you’ve created your own stylized OTech version of this video, please upload your file to YouTube and share the link with us in the comment section of this OliviaTech.com blog post. Let’s put this camera to the test!
Check out some of the current submissions in the comments section: http://oliviatech.com/original-blackmagic-cinema-camera-footage-for-you-to-download-and-alter-in-post#comments

Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera with EF Mount

Does anybody knows if is possible to work with Sony Vegas Pro 12 ?
I’m trying but I cannot import the footage.
It should work. ProRes is one of the most common formats.
Very nice I downloaded and did a quick 3 minute edit in FCPX. You guys are going to have some fun with the black magic camera.
I ordered the GH3 cant wait until it gets to Vegas to see what I will get out of it.
Wow amazing..I love the details in the sky… well done
Thanks smitty, I think I over did it a little I can see it in Her hands they look a little red. Maybe I need to calibrate my screen? Olivia maybe you could suggest a calibration tool and do a tutorial ; ).
it doesnt look red on my computer but it does when i play it on my galaxy s3
Smitty, the Galaxy S3′s don’t have good color calibration, see this link:
http://www.displaymate.com/Smartphone_ShootOut_2.htm
The video above looks good on my iPhone 4s but looks too orange on my Dell IPS screen. I just purchased a Spyder 4Pro but haven’t calibrated the Dell yet.
According the Displaymate article above, the easiest way for most of us to view a well calibrated screen is to get hold of an iPad. They are supposedly even more accurate than the iPhones.
Thanks Olivia, you are doing an awesome job – I think this will prove to be your most interesting post yet!
I used FCPX 10.0.7 with Natress Curves and a small lower third Motype.
I’m getting this error while trying to download the file:
“Sorry, you can’t view or download this file at this time.”
@Matt I’m uploading the file elsewhere now.. thank you for your patience, it will be up again shortly!
Can’t access the file on Google Docs any more, it says that too many have already downloaded.
@Simon I am uploading the file elsewhere now, please hang tight! Thanks for your patience!
Haha. I just discovered I suck at Vegas.

Here’s a quick sample from FCPX from Cheesycam. Maybe a bit warm, but hopefully it will give you guys an idea
Here is my version
Thanks for the footage Olivia. I did two color grades. One cinema style and one pushing the footage.
Downloaded BlackMagic Cinema Camera test footage from oliviatech.com and put it through the dynamic range of absurdity. Holds up pretty well. Better than a DSLR and a lot different from any ENG Pro camera out there today.
Using CS.6 no hiccups no problems, no special settings…little less gamma, little color correction and a lot of Shadow/Highlight altering
5 min of color work in After Effects. Love the range i can work with!
Brent, can you send just the link? The HTML will not pass through the comments.
Here is my effort, with three successive color treatments:
Here’s my quick natural grade using Apple Color.. nothing fancy.. and I’m not very good at using Color..
sorry I didn’t upload to youtube..:/ and like your grade Olivia.. mine is a touch warm.. but that’s how I like it!
Here’s a quick grade using FCP X’s color board, nothing crazy, just trying to get it to look true to life. Adjusted overall exposure and contrast, then used secondaries and masks to bump up the skin tones, sky, and greenery.
Actually, skimming through the Cheesycam’s grade, my grade is like a less extreme version of that one
a three minutes attempt.
Vegas 10 and Colorista.
Thank you Olivia
Here we go. That’s my graded version.

Thanks for the footage Olivia. Good to have a quick mess around with some Pro Res log footage from this camera.

Hi Olivia,

I went pretty basic in Avid Media Composer. https://vimeo.com/56131676

Oops. Thanks. Now public.

@gdotsolo
Hi Olivia, I used Cyberlink ColorDirector to adjust your video. It’s a very easy program to use even for a noob like me. I actually used a preset called ‘Color Pop’ and then after that slightly adjusted the white balance and saturation. It was neat to play with your $3000 camera!
Cheers!

Here’s my edit. Thanks OT
it says my comment is awaiting moderation, im not sure how long that will take. but i stated my changes in the description of the video. aimed at only correction colors and getting close to digital, realistic appearance
@Clayton Got it!
I used the simplest attack by adobe after effects cs5.5, and applied a specialized LUT, then did simple color/contrast with the magic bullets colorista.
My Take – Colorista 2:
Olivia Tech Blackmagic Cinema Camera Grade (Pro Res) from Phil Hover on Vimeo.
Colorista 2, brightened up Her face, darkened surroundings, maintained highlights in shirt.
@Phil Don’t see a video, could you send a link so I can embed? Thank you!
Used Adobe After Effects & Premiere. I only used 30 seconds of the footage. I alternated between the original footage and the edits that I performed.
Monitor was a Dell 24″ LED HD. Don’t know how it will look after Youtube compression on other viewer’s monitors, but it didn’t look bad. Tried to keep the logo on the white t-shirt, white topper tended to blend into the bright building background …happy with the shadows from the parked cars, on the left side of the video. Neat experiment.
Here’s a normal grade.

Prolly my favorite grading I’ve seen. I don’t like the ones that are too exaggerated with saturation and grading. Others are blowing out her shirt or losing details in the shadows, which is the whole point of having such a high dynamic range.
good work!

sorry… here it is
I really enjoyed the opportunity to test out the color correction process on BMCC footage. Everything done in FCPX. Used the “deep brown” look from mLooks by MotionVFX. I then proceeded to put in 20 other separate color corrections using FCPX’s native color correction tools. That includes Color and Image masks. Tons of fun and a really cool interactive project that gets the filmmaking community “working” rather than “talking”.

Hi Olivia: Thank you very much for making this camera-original BMCC ProRes footage available. Much appreciated.
I posted the following on the Vimeo page, but in case you didn’t see it there:
Questions for Olivia or Emm (answers will help me understand what I’m looking at):
- What was the BMCC’s ISO set to?
- What white balance setting?
- What lens f-stop?
- What was the approx. lens focal length?
- If you used a ND filter, was it a vari-ND or a conventional ND filter?
- If a conventional ND filter, what amount of ND?
- Any other filters such as IR cut, etc.?
- If you used zebras, what were they set to? Do you know the approx. IRE value on Olivia’s face?
Thanks in advance for any additional info. Cheers.
- Peter
@Peter I will do something different and note down the settings after the holidays.

Thanks for posting the Black Magic footage! It would be much appreciated if you could post some small RAW clips under varying lighting circumstances that push the sensor’s capabilities.
A few questions:
1) Have they amended the firmware to allow for adjustable kelvins in the white balance or is it just preset color temps?
2) Can the camera format drives internally?
3) Does the firmware allow you to delete clips in camera?
Thanks again for all your good work! Watch your lav tail.
@Josh
1) Still has basic presets from what I know. I have not heard of an update as of yet.
2) It will not format the SSD internally.
3) You cannot delete clips within the camera.

here is my take on the grade
I think this take just needs a basic grading. it´s a broadcast situation so no hard film look grading needed ! i think it´s not the best take to see what the bmcc cam can do. it´s a normal daylight set – every cam like the mark III, fs 100, and so on will look like that !
@Olivia did you notice the weird vertical lines near the white and blue offroad ? Same on the prores footage !!!
Faulty bmcc or something else ?
@Papinope I did not notice that until you mentioned it. I will have to review our original footage again before I reply. In your YouTube video, I can see what you are talking about though.
Graded with Vegas Movie Studio 11 HD.
