F&V R-300 LED Ring Light vs 600 LED Panel vs 312 LED Light

Here is a video done by Emm over at cheesycam.com on F&V’s new popular R-300 LED Ring Light. In the video below, he puts it up against the 600 LED Panel and the very popular 312 LED Video Light.

This is a pretty clear demonstration of the light output on the R-300 LED Ring Light when compared to the larger and heavier 600 LED light. Keep in mind a few things here: the R-300 LED Ring Light is overall a much smaller, lighter, and cheaper light than the 600 LED Panel. It is powered by standard and inexpensive Sony Batteries and can be mounted on either your camera or on a light stand without sand bags.

From what I can see, the 600 LED is more spotted and from what I’ve experienced, will give off multiple shadows due to the individual LED lights. The R-300 LED Ring Light is not only a single shadow light (due to their diffusion technique) this light also has a very nice CRI. F&V is proud to own this standar with their LED Light options.

R-300 SPECIFICATIONS
- 300 Daylight Balanced LEDs ( 5600K )
- 1950 Lux @ 1-meter
- 85% Color Rendering Index
- Seamless Power Variation: 0-100%
- Flicker-free for Film and Video

The real sticking point here, aside from all of the details listed above, is the price of the R-300 LED Ring Light. Tough to beat!

Wow! Officially blown away. I’m really impressed with the light output of the R-300. I like the falloff better than the 600 as well.

Wow I might have to try one of these.

I just bought the new version of the 312 for use on camera and as a hairlight for interviews. I really like the ability to change the color temperature of the 312 on the fly with the dial. But I have to say the R300 looks really great — better than my new 312. :-( But the 312 is more portable and fits the bill for me at this point. You and Emm always tempt me to spend more money than I need to.

Hey Olivia, Do have any experience with the K4000/K4000S 1×1? I’m tempted by their set of 3… Do you know if they are better than the 600? Do you know if they are a lot more powerful than the R-300? Or not so much? And what LED 1×1 (or equivalent if the ring light is as powerful) and from what manufacturer you would recommend? Thank you!

    • Olivia says:

@Noah I do not, as of yet, have any hands on experience with the K4000 LED lights. I’m guessing that the CRI is better on the K4000′s than what you would get on most 600 LED light panels. F&V’s K4000′s also product single shadow light, I know this is not true for the 600′s. I have not done a side by side compare with the R-300 in terms of light intensity and throw, so I do not know this yet. Your last question depends on how much you’re looking to spend and what type of quality you want from your light. I would look at lux, intensity and CRI. F&V and Fotodiox make very nicely colored lights and their sites provide the proper information you need to know to determine whether the light of your choice is right for you. The lux is a measure of the amount of visible light from the light and the lumens are a measure of the intensity of illumination on your subject. Check these specs out for the lights you’re interested in. I will have some videos coming out as soon as I get the K4000 and I’m shooting one today with the R-300, I hope they help!

Impressive! What about the K4000? any test coming?

  • Scott says:

I would like to see a comparison between this and the 18″ beauty ringlight you demoed a while back.

    Hi Olivia
What is the best way to mount with my Steadicam Merlin with no rails?
    thanks
