Canon 5D Mark III Video TEST
(Note: tests run quick so pause video. Longer video samples will be available for download.)
Thanks to BorrowLenses.com (photography and video equipment rentals), we were able to have early access to two Canon 5D Mark III cameras + Zeiss CP.2 Prime lenses. We shot this video a few days ago and first decided to throw it into a real production environment at the Myx Television studios where most of their television shows are shot completely on Canon DSLRs. It was interesting to see the crew trying to learn the new menus and new positions of buttons they were once familiar with. Overall, the 5D Mark III performed without any issues. You could find more of their videos shot mostly on Canon DSLRs at http://Myx.TV.com
Our next tests were the Canon 5D Mark III in studio along side a Canon 5D Mark II. We decided to use the 24-105mm F/4L on both cameras since it would be closer to what most people would have access to. These tests run quickly through the video, so please pause the video to see the examples.
[Update] Longer video clips available for you to download at the BorrowLenses.com blog Canon 5D Mark II vs Canon 5D Mark III Video Clips.
We wished we had more time with the equipment to run more proper tests, but thanks again to BorrowLenses.com for allowing us early access to one of the most talked about cameras. We will have more in depth about the new features of the 5D Mark III in another review.
In the last year BorrowLenses.com has really increased their rental equipment for Videographers including high end cameras like the RED Scarlet and C300 along with Sliders, LED Lighting, Audio, Tripods, Lenses, Cameras, and more. You just place your order online and you’ll have it shipped to your door. They include the return labels and packaging for you to ship the item back. Nothing could be easier. Great vid! I use LensProToGo and they have a bunch of MK3s, the D4, and 3 C300s! In case anyone wants them sooner
Thanks for sharing. I wish you could have gone a lot slower with the tests, I’m having to watch it many times.
Hi Dave, we mention that we’ll have full res video files for you to download soon, and also mentioned you should press pause during the tests. We are also reuploading the video to 1080 instead of 720 (currently)
Ok sorry if I missed that.
Best test i’ve seen so far. As an avid nikon user I considered switching. The lack of clean hdmi was the deal breaker for me. But now this puts everything into a new perspective. Here’s a question. Do you think the improved iso performance is significant enough to justify in getting this over a new mark 2?
wow.. this is so cool what you guys did… allowing the use of the pre-released 5D Mark III…. AMAZING!
Thanks for the side-by-side, Olivia. Great work on a short timeline. I love the folks at borrowlenses too!
Bill
I am not sure how to put this, but a bunch of the jib shots were a distraction to me since they were not framed properly, etc. Maybe its because I run a jib and notice that type of thing more.
I did like how the blowing hair was caught well by the camera(s).
Oh…my…wow. I wanna be like you when I grow up.
I know this test is older now that the cameras are out. I am curious did you sharpen the Mark lll in post and what picture style did you shoot the test with and if it was shot flat did you add any contrast in post.
@dphotos We shot flat and did not touch anything up in post.
