BTS of FaceMe Makeup Tutorial Video
I wanted to help out my friend Carlen Jewelle with her makeup blog so we shot a red lipstick video tutorial on our infinite white setup in the studio. We wanted to keep it casual and have some fun with the clip. Carlen did her thing and it gave us an opportunity to experiment with a mirrored tint plexiglass setup. The idea for this shoot was to keep her engaged with the audience while still being able to apply her makeup. We didn’t want Carlen looking away into a mirror the entire time so we needed to build something to shoot through. The plexiglass and black cloth tent mock up was constructed so we could shoot trough the mirror tint and avoid a lens flare or glare, and was also necessary to get maximum reflection in our DIY one way mirror. In oder to do this, we had to black out the area between the Diva Ring Light and the lens so there would be no light leaks, hence the black cloth tent.
Here is the finished product. If we do another video I’d like to trim it down to only a few minutes. This easily could have been a 3 part series.
Here’s some BTS images of our setup for the tutorial.
The Diva Ring light played an important role in this video. Often considered as a beauty ring it provided soft even flattering lighting, and giving us a way to shoot through the middle.

On-screen text and/or VO helped with running length than a running MUA narration.
man, y’all have me sold on that diva light – between you and Emm, my wallet hurts. LOL!
Olivia: This has nothing to do with the ring light but I wanted to ask you a couple of questions about the mirrored plexiglass.
Would the mirrored tint Plexiglass work for a DIY iPad teleprompter?
Did you buy the plexi already mirror tinted or did you have to have it done somewhere?
Hi Dave, yes it can work as a DIY teleprompter. Keep in mind that plexiglass can reduce sharpness and the tint you choose may have a color cast. There is different levels of reflective tint that will also cut out light to the lens. Make sure you have plenty of light available.
Hey Dave it’s really amazing tutorial on face makeup. I will surely follow your techniques. I have many tutorials on makeup from some makeup schools. I think you are right also with all of your works on makeup! Actually I don’t use red lipstick but after watching your “face me with red lip” video I think I should use it……. I did not know that there are four types of red (Sheer, Warm, Blue, red red! ) before watching your video! I love SHEER RED and will use it….
Hi, re makeup, do you have any ideas on how to create the gothic look with eye-liner? I have tried a few times but been not very successful unfortunately. Thank-you!
@lymasta I don’t actually do make-up. You should message Carlen (the girl featured in this video) for help!
Hi Olivia, wondering if the Diva Ring can be purchased with the mirror plexiglass. Thinking of buying one for makeup tutorials, so having a mirror would be perfect! Thx
@Diana I don’t know that the Diva Ring can be sold with the plexiglass. It’s a simple piece to purchase at a hardware store though. I’m sure they’ll help you out as long as you have the dimensions.
Thanks for your promp reply, will def give it a go!
