Blackmagic Cinema Camera – Unboxing

The long, I mean l-o-n-g wait for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera ended today. I was able to unbox this precious gemstone of a camera and my GOD did it feel good. If you haven’t ordered yours yet, they are currently available on B&H Photo Video for less than what you would pay for a Canon 5D Mark III.

My first thought when I held the camera was that it is heavy! I wasn’t expecting the body to be so solid and robust. This camera is certainly not made ergonomically for shooting handheld and the form factor alone proves this. Stack on the weight and the positioning of the controls on the back and you soon find that mounting the Blackmagic is really the best way to get the most out of shooting videos with it. The interface alone is pretty straight forward, you don’t get all of the menus and options that most photo + video cameras have for you to navigate through and learn.
The BMCC is currently on backorder, but the sooner you place yours, the sooner you will receive the camera. More footage to come!

Congratulations! It seems like more of these are finally being shipped since the delay. I love the BMC’s colors and dynamic range I’ve seen from videos lately. Please post plenty of footage, Olivia! Thanks.

      Finally here , huh ?
Hope you can do a lot of videos for us ! Cant wait !
I wish they release a model with a MFT mount with working AF !!!

But I just cant see a prosumer guy walking in the park with this camera. Maybe this gonna be a great add for indies but its heavy and bulky for carry in a trip , and no stills …

Again, it can be a game changer for indies …can wait to see you footage !!!
      a hug from Rio …

You are SOooooooo lucky! Can you look at the following?

How many stops difference between RAW and Pro Res?
How hot does the camera get?
How loud does the fan get?
Can you do an audio test ?
Does it show audio levels yet?
Does it show how long is left on the battery?
Is there a green tint to the images?
      Can you delete in camera?
Can you format SSD in camera?
      How well does IS work?
      Low Light test?
How does your widest lens perform?
Can you go through ISO and Shutter Angles?
Can you go through ND fader you use?

So eh yeah just a few questions lol

    • Nice! I’m holding out for the m4/3rds version…. hacked GH2 till then.

Okay and when do you do the Giveaway ;D

    • DP45 says:

Good shoot with it check out the dynamic range of the image, rent a 16mm ARRI and shoot with it compare and see what it looks like. Surprised it took you so long to get the camera from B&H New York, since you could have bought it from Black Magic Directly , who are situated in the Bay Area. But then again What do I know?

    • Martin says:

      First camera with thunderbolt connectors.

    • Rob S. says:

This camera seems so great in many ways yet weirdly limited in others. Why the built in battery? Selling spare batteries is a cash cow. And what’s the deal with the 1/4″ audio jacks? Can’t wait to see the sample footage.

not true, just went to b&h photo website and says backordered. it has been like that all the time. not in stock

      • Olivia says:

@gabriel It is not in stock, however even as a backorder, you can place and you’ll be queued on a list. If you don’t place an order, you will not be in line.
