3D GoPro, 360VM Slider, smallHD DP6 and Manfrotto
We had a really fun shoot this weekend in San Francisco. We filmed a friend of mine and fellow camera nerd, Ryan Michael Louie (you can find his blog HERE). I wanted to show you all a little BTS of our setup. In the video I’m showing our 3D GoPro housing with a third GoPro hooked up to a smallHD DP6 on a Kamerar friction arm so we can monitor the shots. The friction arm is attached to a C clamp mount with a 1/4 20 male thread. We’re using Manfrotto sticks with the Manfrotto 501 fluid head. We are using the 360VM slider that has a belt crank pulley. I’m explaining how we’re mimicking a crane shot by doing a vertical slider shot and panning up.

How does the 360vm slider compare in smoothness to the Konova roller bearing? The Konova looks as smooth as silk, but is a little noisy.
The 360VM slider has a crank pulley and for the price point, it’s a sweet deal! With a crank pulley you’re going to get more friction and a more even and consistent slide of the trolley. When you vary the speed of your movement with a crank/pulley slider, it tends to be a bit more fluid than with a roller bearing slider, like a Konova for example. Also, with a crank slider, you can use the crank/pulley feature or slide by hand.
Hey Olivia, I use to be a BBoy so I can’t wait to see the BBoy in action. Also, It’s almost snow season so wondering if you can suggest an ideal Go Pro Video Cam for snowboarding that can perhaps widthstand a few falls. Of course it would need to be water resistant. Keep up the good work!
Thanks,
John
Hey John, I’d go with the GoPro Helmet Hero, there is a waterproof housing included. Here is a fun option if you want an LCD screen to see what you’re shooting. http://oliviatech.com/the-gopro-lcd-bacpac
can you do a comparison review with the 360vm and the konova sliders?
with test footage?
the 360 looks like a sweet deal, but i’ve had bad experience with non-roller sliders in the past and im worried about how much weight it could carry before getting jittery.
thanks =]
The 360VM slider is currently sold out. Ours is being loaned out. If they get more back in, I will do a little comparison video for you!
Hey Oliv!!
I am about to get the 360VM but I was wondering what is the actual quality on it since you already tried it hands on?
There were plenty of bad feedback regarding the shipping via the ebay seller so I wasn’t certain if it was worth looking into. (about things falling apart once arrive)
Did you order it normally or got it directly from the maker?
Thanks and cheers!
M
Hello, it looks like the 360VM slider is currently sold out. The unit that we had in the studio for a short amount of time was sufficient for achieving sliding shots. The crank pulley system, in my opinion, wasn’t any better or worse than the Konova push pull slider that I normally use. One benefit of the 360VM slider is that you could motorize it if you wish to alter the original construction of the slider. As for the performance, I prefer the push pull sliders because I feel like I have more control. Some argue that the crank pulley allows for more consistent motions. I really feel like it’s all a matter of practice. There is a technique to it and once you get that down, either slider will look good. Let me know what you decide!
Or sorry!
One more question, was the crank pulley smooth enough to get the job done?
Roger that, many thanks for the tip sis! Will drop some feedback once it gets here. Keep up the great work, really appreciate all your review & tutorials! Cheers
